Ugandan military arrests soldier over weekend shooting near pilgrim site

UGANDAN military on Monday said that it has arrested one of its soldiers in connection with the weekend shooting which seriously injured four of his colleagues in the central district of Wakiso.

Brig. Richard Karemire, Uganda’s military spokesperson, said that Corporal Yoram Tumwesigye fired several bullets injuring four of his colleagues on Saturday night while on guard duty at a camping site away from the Uganda Martyrs Shrines, Namugongo, which hosted thousands of people,

“He was arrested and investigations are going on. The injured are responding well and no pilgrim was injured,” said Karemire.

The incident occurred just hours after thousands of pilgrims gathered to commemorate the annual Uganda Martyrs Day at Namugongo Shrines on Sunday.

There have been several incidences of soldiers firing bullets killing and injuring colleagues and civilians in recent years.

In June 2016, a soldier attached to the military police ran berserk killing seven, including colleagues, women and children at Makindye military barracks in the capital, Kampala.
