UCH resident doctors begin 3-day strike over alleged assault on member

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has initiated a three-day strike in response to an alleged unprovoked assault on one of its members by the relatives of a patient.

It is claimed that the doctor was assaulted while attending to a sickle cell anemia patient on Sunday.

Dr. John Oladapo, the President of UCH ARD, was quoted in a statement provided to the media, demanding a public apology from the alleged relatives of the patient. He also urged the hospital to enhance its security architecture to prevent future incidents.

The statement reads, “On Sunday, one of our members was the target of a deliberate, premeditated, planned rage, and a furious assault by a patient’s relative.

“The doctor was attending to a known Sickle Cell patient in a painful crisis at the Emergency Department when the two men confronted him in the consulting room and commenced beating him up.

“The hospital’s security officers intervened and rescued our member, but not before he sustained injuries, as well as mental health and self-esteem issues.”
