UAE donates relief materials to Borno flood victims

No fewer than 50 tonnes of relief materials have been donated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to alleviate the suffering of flood victims in Borno State.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) disclosed this on Sunday, saying the donation was part of efforts to support those affected by the recent flooding.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, made this known during a meeting with Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, in Maiduguri.

According to her,”the UAE has donated 50 tonnes of relief materials, including food and non-food items, to support the flood victims in Borno State,” Umar said.

She assured that NEMA would continue to work with the state government to ensure the relief materials reach the affected persons.

Governor Zulum commended NEMA and the UAE for their support, saying, “We appreciate your efforts in supporting our people in this difficult time.”

Zulum revealed that the state government has no plans to maintain the 36 camps established for flood victims indefinitely due to logistical challenges.

He noted that the camps have been inundated with individuals not affected by the flooding, putting a strain on resources.

Despite this, the state government will provide food and relief items to genuine victims for two more weeks.

Zulum urged NEMA to collaborate closely with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to address the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the collapse of the Alao Dam.

He lamented that people from nearby villages, unaffected by the flood, have been trooping to the camps to benefit from aid, diverting resources from those who genuinely need it.
