U.S: Tornado Watch issued for entire Kansas City metro on Wednesday

Published by

The National Weather Service (NWS) has placed the Kansas City metropolitan area under a Tornado Watch until 10 p.m. Wednesday, as severe weather is expected to impact the region throughout the evening.

An enhanced risk level has been issued for the area, with conditions conducive to tornado formation, though none have been confirmed on radar so far.

The NWS warns that severe thunderstorms, powerful wind gusts up to 70 mph, and hail over 1 inch in diameter are possible.

Localised heavy rainfall may result in water accumulation on roadways, creating hazardous conditions for drivers on major routes, including I-70 and other heavily trafficked thoroughfares. The most significant threat is expected to begin after 4 p.m., coinciding with the evening commute.

The Tornado Watch covers a wide swathe of the metro area, including Jackson, Clay, Platte, Clinton, Ray, Dekalb, Holt, and Caldwell counties in Missouri, as well as Johnson, Wyandotte, Douglas, Atchison, Leavenworth, Miami, Franklin, and Linn counties in Kansas.

The FOX4 Weather Team reports that thunderstorms are likely to intensify after 5 p.m., bringing a 90% chance of precipitation, with gusts over 36 mph posing additional threats of downed trees, power outages, and reduced visibility for motorists. In areas prone to flooding, brief yet heavy downpours may heighten risks on the road.

Residents are urged to remain weather-aware and ensure they have reliable ways to receive any severe weather alerts. Looking ahead, Thursday’s forecast brings a much-needed break with cooler, clearer skies and a high of 56°F, though rain chances return on Saturday with likely showers and potential evening thunderstorms.
