Two suspected cult members were on Wednesday night killed by members of a rival group in Akungba Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, in what seemed to be a reprisal attack.
It was gathered that the two suspected cult members are known for their notoriety in the community while one of the deceased who was identified as “AY Killer” was said to be rounded up by his opponents and shot severally.
A source explained that the deceased attempted to escape from the scene but was overpowered by the opponents who left him in his pool of blood after confirming that he was dead.
He said some of his gang tried to rescue him but was confirmed dead at a clinic.
He, however, said the cult war in the hilly town may not be unconnected with the murder of one Babatunde Adeluka Olubasa who was killed by some gunmen in a hotel in Akure, the state capital on Christmas Boxing day.
The development caused palpable tension in the host community of Adekunle Ajasin University, while detectives and policemen from the state police command were drafted to the town.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro, said only one person was killed during the fracas.
He said the clash should not be seen as a reprisal attack to the killing of Olubasa who was killed in Akure last week.
He, however, said the command had commenced an investigation into the incident with an assurance that those behind the killing would be brought to book.
It would be recalled that one Olubasa was killed by suspected gunmen in Akure last Saturday.
