Two killed, 10 injured in Bauchi auto crash

A ghastly auto crash that occurred in Tashan Maialewa along Bauchi -Dass road has claimed two lives while 10 others were injured.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Corps Commander and Head of Operations, Bauchi Sector Command of FRSC, Ibrahim Abubakar, in an interview with our correspondent on Monday.

He said that the accident which was caused by excessive speeding occurred on Saturday at about 3.30pm involving three vehicles, a Mercedes Benz with Reg. No. BAU 172 GC and two Sharon commercial vehicles of which one had the Reg. No. WKB 374 XA.

Ibrahim Abubakar explained that “on Saturday, 27th July 2019 at about 3.30pm, we got a call that there was an accident at Tashan Maialewa, along Bauchi-Dass road. Our men rushed to the scene for rescue. The accident involved three vehicles, a Mercedes Benz with Reg No. BAU 172 GC and two Sharon commercial vehicles, one of the Sharon had the Reg No. WKB 374 XA.”

He added that “the accident was caused by excessive speeding and that day, rain fell heavily, so the Mercedes Benz and one of the Sharon collided and the second Sharon came and ran into the two vehicles that had the accident.”

“Twelve people were involved in the crash, 10 male adults, 1 male adult and 1 female adult. Our men rushed them to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi for medical attention,” Ibrahim Abubakar further said.

He added that they were rushed to the hospital in two ambulances but “unfortunately, two of male adults were confirmed dead by a Medical Doctor while the remaining 10, 1 male child, 1 female child and 8 male adults sustained injuries” and called on drivers to be more cautious while driving on the highways especially during the rainy season.

He stated that “three major things I would warn them on: first, they should be more cautious while on the road. They should always remember that they are carrying human beings and their lives depend on them, so they should drive with extra care.

“Secondly, they should make sure that their tyres are not old ones but new and their braking systems should be working effectively. And finally, they should always reduce their speed. If these are observed by motorists, most of the frequent accidents on our highways will be drastically reduced to the barest minimum,” he advised.

He then warned drivers to observe traffic regulations because “we are always on the road and if we arrest any offender, we will not spare them but we will prosecute them in accordance with the laws.”
