Two die as mining pit collapses in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the deaths of two individuals following the collapse of a mining pit in the Farin-Doki area of Shiroro Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Niger, SP Wasiu Abiodun, made this announcement on Monday while addressing journalists in Minna.

He reported that the incident occurred on Sunday, trapping two miners who were later identified as Buhari Kano and Mallam Tasiu, both from Kano State.

According to SP Abiodun, police operatives from the Erena Division, along with local residents, rushed to the scene to initiate rescue efforts.

Sadly, according to him, the victims were found lifeless and their bodies were taken to Zumba hospital for further examination.

He stated further that preliminary findings suggest that the victims were illegally mining at the site on the previous night before the collapse.

SP Wasiu Abiodun stressed that a full investigation is ongoing to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
