‘Turn it up’ will break all boundaries on Sunday —Big B

Bolaji Olanrewaju, who is best known by his stage name-Big B-will on Sunday, hold one of the biggest gospel concerts in Nigeria. His ‘Turn it up’ concert has become the toast of people around the South-West and draws top-rated artistes from all over the country. ROTIMI IGE caught up with him recently and presents the excerpt of their interaction.

What should we expect from this year’s ‘Turn it up’ concert?

As usual, people should expect a lot of fun and relaxing moments. It is also an avenue to appreciate God on individual levels. We are expecting many of the best gospel acts from around the country and special God’s generals like Mummy Esther Ajayi, Pastor Austin Ologbese, Mummy Omolewa Ahmed, among other top celebrities.

You have become one of the most travelled gospel music ministers in Nigeria. What would you attribute to your success?

Well, I may be one of the most travelled but certainly not the most travelled. First, the love and grace of the Most High God towards me and my crew, and sticking to what God has sent me out to do are what I would say are responsible for my success. Also, the joy of a supportive, understanding wife and children goes a long way in the matter. How the invites come however, I can’t explain.

You remain a bandleader and not a recording artiste, why?

I choose to be both but I emphasise the brand more than being tagged to a song, but I am doing more recordings now.

Which is better or easier? Or can one do both?

Both are very important! None is more important (smiles )

What other projects are you involved in?

Quite a few, I am doing a lot with my coffee brand, for which I am an ambassador. Also, we run events, set up venues and also have some major concerts coming up in Accra and London. I am also doing a lot of flying to Jerusalem, Dubai, Singapore, Canada and America for non-religious work (smiles).

What can you say about the gospel music industry in Nigeria?

It’s getting better and sane but it’s important that gospel artistes submit themselves to  be guided and not be a loose cannons. They need to be real and realistic at all times, and not live lies.

Many young people are coming up in the gospel music industry yet critics opine that their lifestyle is still of the world. Your take?

It’s very true, some have foundation that’s not aligned to what is termed ‘gospel’ , so we must first check if the foundation is aligned with the Christ they speak about and not be carried away by their musical dexterity.

How can one make money and endorsements in the gospel music industry?

By sticking to what you do and not assuming you deserve it. Many say it’s not possible to have corporate organisations to support gospel, but that’s not true. We have had Nescafe support ‘Turn it up’ for nine years and MTN for seven years, and that’s just to mention a few .

How do you relax?

Spending time with family and watching movies.
