Internationally-recognised chess player and Guinness World Record holder, Tunde Onakoya, has donated no fewer than 25 chess boards to Ogbomoso Recreation Club.
The donation, according to Onakoya, is targeted at further promoting the game of chess in Nigeria.
President of the club, Dr Akin Oladeji-Johnbrown, while appreciating Onakoya on behalf of members for the kind gesture, noted that the chess boards will be adequately utilised, expressing optimism that very soon members of the club will be representing Nigeria at international chess competitions.
Meanwhile, the club has launched a chess section. The launch was done with a one-day chess competition which was held on the club’s premises on Wednesday.
Aside from the sporting aspect of the one-day event, Professor Jide Ajao, the Vice-President of the club appreciated Mr Onakoya and further said that the Chess event afforded members and invited guests to network by meeting with business leaders, society leaders, and emerging leaders from different backgrounds.
Other exco members of ORC at the event were: Chief Pekun Armstrong; Olaleye, Mr Isaac Ojo, and Chief Okelana.
Amongst the guests were medical Students of the Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH). The event ended with social activities amongst the attendees. The club will announce the next chess event in March 2025.
