TUC will continue to negotiate better deal for workers ― Kaigama

THE President, Trade Union Congress, Comrade Bobboi Kaigama, has said that the labour body would continue to negotiate a better deal for workers from both the state and the federal governments.

Kaigama who spoke through the union’s National General Secretary, Lawal Musa, at the 4th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Ogun State Council of TUC, in Abeokuta, stressed that the leadership would not compromise on fighting for the welfare of the nation’s workforce.

He explained that the Union at all times consult with government on providing better welfare packages for workers, saying so many efforts are ongoing without the union making noise about it.

He said, “We will not compromise on fighting for the welfare of the workers. We have continued to engage government at various levels to get a better deal for them (workers).

“The fact that we are not making a noise about it does not mean that we have compromised or totally neglected our mandate to protect workers’ interest.”

Speaking on the theme of the conference “Consolidating The Nation’s Democratic Experience: The Labour Role”, the union boss, advised workers to participate actively in the democratic process to elect new leaders in 2019.

Kaigama said workers in the country should not be at the background in the political system of the country, saying their participation in politics would make them to formulate policies that would be of advantage to them.

He said, “This is a political era, workers must play a role in the nation’s democracy.

“As a union, we will play our part; we shall mobilise people to vote. Union people should also take active parts in politics, so as to be able to determine our fate. If you refuse to play politics, politics will play you.”

The state chairman of the TUC, Comrade Bunmi Fajobi, appealed to the state government to pay all outstanding being owed workers while appreciating it for various measures employed at ameliorating the conditions of workers.

Fajobi also called on Governor Ibikunle Amosun to rescind his decision that civil servants should wait till 2020 before they can be promoted.
