TUC condemns casualisation, slave labour in Nigeria

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) had condemned casualisation and contract staff in all the sectors of Nigerian economy.

In a communique issued after the meeting National Executive Council (NEC), the NEC  in session condemned all forms of casualisation and slave labour in Nigeria.

To checkmate this trend, the congress said it would, during the year engage any employer that violates the right of Nigerian workers to unionise and have permanent employment.

It advised the government to extend Local Content Policy as applied in the oil sector to be applicable to other sectors of the economy.

A communique signed by the President of TUC, Comrade Quadri Olaleye, and the Secretary General, Comd. Barrister Musa Lawal, also commended the proposed review of Labour Law.

The communique read: “NEC-in session appreciates the need to review the Nigeria Labour Laws to suit the present day realities in the world of work but warns against attempt from any quarter to remove labour issues from exclusive legislative list.”

The congress lamented insecurity in the country and renewed threat to global peace, saying, “the NEC-in-session reiterates the spate of insecurity in the country. The Congress therefore calls on Federal Government to intensify more practical efforts towards wiping out killings, kidnapping and insurgency to save the country from total collapse.

“NEC -in -session resolves to participate in a global rally against war slated for January 25, 2020; in view of the vulnerability of workers in war period.”

The congress stated that it was alarmed by the rumours of investment in the TUC, warning that it is not true.
