Trump threatens to terminate US-Cuba deal

Published by

DONALD Trump has said he will “terminate” the deal between the United States and Cuba if the Cuban government does not improve the deal on offer.
President Barack Obama has worked to improve relations with the communist government in Havana, culminating in his historic visit in March 2016.
But the president-elect threatened in a tweet to put an end to the thaw.
His tweet came as thousands of Cubans queued to pay their respects to Fidel Castro, who died on Friday.
“If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the US as a whole, I will terminate deal,” Mr Trump wrote on Monday.
The Republican had promised to reverse the Obama administration’s Cuban thaw late in his campaign, BBC stated.
Hours after the 90-year-old leader of the Cuban revolution died, Mr Trump said he was a brutal dictator, but his statement at the weekend made no mention of his campaign pledge.
Earlier in the campaign, he had said he was “fine” with Mr Obama’s policies on Cuba. “Fifty years is enough time, folks,” he said during a CNN televised debate.
On his visit to the island, Mr Obama said change would happen in Cuba and that Cuban President Raul Castro – Fidel’s brother – understood that.
