Treat patients as humans, health minister charges medical personnel

Published by

Medical personnel have been urged to prioritise quality healthcare services for patients and treat them with dignity.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, gave the charge shortly after inspecting the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, emphasising that patients should be handled with empathy and without unnecessary excuses.

“If professionals do not have the right attitude, they will not be able to deliver the best quality services.

You must provide quality care services to patients and welcome them each time they come for medical attention. Patients should be treated as human beings, with empathy, which is a greater priority for us than simply building infrastructure,” the Minister stated.

Dr Salako, who was received by the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FMC Asaba, Dr Victor Osiatuma, announced the Federal Government’s commitment to recruiting more staff to reduce the workload on medical personnel and increasing funding for the health sector to enhance service delivery.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to support health institutions across the board for the benefit of all citizens.

“The government will ensure your welfare, provide the necessary equipment for your work, and create an enabling environment to deliver quality healthcare services to the people,” he said.

The Minister of State commended the management of FMC Asaba for its remarkable infrastructural and clinical advancements, stating, “I am very impressed with the progress achieved so far, despite the prevailing challenges.”

However, he identified limited space as one of the major challenges affecting the hospital’s expansion and its ability to integrate new medical innovations.
