Treat Obasanjo’s letter with sense of responsibility, CAN urges Buhari

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have called on the President Muhammadu Buhari not to disregard the open letter written to him by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, instead, he should treat the letter with all sense of responsibility.

The Christian Apex body who disclosed this while addressing journalists on the state of the nation noted that insecurity which has spread across the nation, had left some churches destroyed.

The Vice President of CAN, Elder Dr Caleb Ahima who said this, noted that Nigerians have the right to speak up when they see things that would threaten the peace of the country.

“I don’t think CAN is meant to take a position on that letter, CAN is interested that the letter should be treated with all sense of responsibility and accountability as a Country because of the issues raised in it. I think the aim of the writer is to call the attention of the nation to things that are capable of setting fire on the nation, that’s how I look at it.

“However we think that every Nigerian has a right as a part of this society if he or she sees something that will threaten the peace of this nation to bring it up and let it be treated and given the attention it needs”, he said.

Furthermore, on the issues about Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, the CAN President Reverend Dr Samson Ayokunle said CAN had directed the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) to investigate the issue.

“I told you in the press release we issued that we have given the right to Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) because we don’t deal with individual churches, we deal with blocs.

“We have directed PFN which is arm of a bloc which is also large enough to go and investigate that matter and am telling you under God that PFN has set up that panel and that panel had been given 2 weeks within which to submit their report, not only that, the two individuals involved have been invited by them and we are assuring them that nothing would be covered.

“We have told you without mincing words that we will never support immorality in whatever form, it is alien to the culture of the church, to the teachings of Christ, and there is no pulpit that I know in Nigeria that the members taught immorality, but we will not condemn until we have reasons to condemn, let the panel come out with their result let’s know what the truth is”, the CAN President said.

On insecurity, Reverend Ayokunle said he had told the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria to call their members who carry AK47 and attack villages to order.

“The first time they (Miyetti Allah) came here, when they came to book appointment that they would want to come in larger group, I told them if they want to give themselves credibility, they should call their members who are violent to order, because nobody hates the Fulani until the Fulani begin to kill everybody.

“So if there is any enemy from any Fulani man, the Fulani man created the enemy for himself, they have been living with us for many years in our communities, our children married them, they married our children, but when they became too violent and started carrying AK47 killing people, what type of play is that? that’s a dangerous play.

“We can no longer think we are friends with that type of play it’s too dangerous, so let them call their people to order and ensure that they will remove the enmity they have created around an average Fulani person.

“I challenged them to call the violent once among them to order, that is the only way people will respect them and people can trust them again”, he added.
