TRCN set to host AFTRA in May —Registrar

Published by

THE Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is set to host the 7th African Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) in May, 2018.

Registrar of the council, Professor Segun Ajiboye, disclosed this on Monday while speaking with newsmen on poor education quality in Africa.

According to him, the conference is to find solutions to issues bordering on how to ensure delivery of quality education in Africa, among other pressing issues.

The registrar, who noted that attending to poor quality of education in Africa is a continental resolve, said that Nigeria is also interested in ensuring that the current poor school certificate results and underachievement in schooling are reversed.

Ajiboye said that the theme of the conference, ‘Teaching and Learning in Africa in the Context of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 2016 – 2025’, is aimed at charting a sustainable strategy for the delivery of quality education.

He said that the conference would provide opportunities for exchange of best practices between the statutory regulators of the teaching profession in Africa and members of the global community, particularly the academia, ICT experts, employers of teachers, teachers’ unions and international development partners.

Ajiboye said the conference would also feature a presentation on the implications of terrorism, refugees and the internally displaced on education in Africa, as well as the professionalisation of teaching in Africa.

He added that the African Union would be hosting a special session at the conference where all ministers of education in Africa would discuss the progress on teacher professionalism and the teaching profession in Africa.

Ajiboye maintained that while the last edition of the conference was hosted by South Africa, the choice of Nigeria for this global audience is not unconnected with the commitment and zeal of Nigeria to the professionalisation of the teaching profession.
