Transport group decries unlawful arrest of members in Oyo

A group of concerned commercial drivers in Oyo State have called on the Inspector-General of Police, National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Commissioner of Police in the State, to come to their aid by way of prompt intervention in the unlawful arrest of their members by security operatives in Ibadan.

The group, in a statement signed by their spokesperson, Abdulmalik Ibidapo, and made available to journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday, noted that the quest by a former factional leader of the NURTW in the State, to become the new chairman of the union at all cost made him connive with an aide to the governor of Oyo State to point accusing fingers to some members of NURTW at Iwo-Road area of Ibadan, thereby causing their unlawful arrest.

The statement further held that these actions were aimed at clipping the wings of NURTW members who are resisting the illegal takeover of motor parks by Lamidi and his cohorts despite the fact that the union is still under proscription by the State Government.

The group, therefore, urged the Inspector General of Police, the National President of NURTW, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, other security agencies as well governor Seyi Makinde to wade into the matter in order to avert a crisis in the State.
