Tragedy struck in Ido-Ekiti, headquarters of Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Saturday, as four persons were killed while two others are critically injured in a vehicle accident in the town.
Witnesses told the Sunday Tribune that a woman and her child of about seven years, who were riding on a commercial motorcycle to Usi-Ekiti, died in the accident while the injured motorcyclist was taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital (FETHI) in the town.
Two other victims of the incident were trapped under the articulated vehicle, belonging to a popular company, while officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and government struggled to remove the fallen vehicle and clear the carnage.
The witnesses claimed that a Mercedes Benz car had crossed the path of the trailer, which made the driver to lose control of his vehicle, which crashed into the victims.
Chairman of the local government, Mr. Ayodele Arogbodo, who said he visited the scene of the accident, explained the trailer was coming from Lagos State via Ijero Ekiti and lost control at Usi-Ido junction before crashing into two moving commercial motorcyclists and overran them.
Arogbodo said “one of the Okadas carried two passengers and another one carried three people. Three of these five persons died on the spot while the two other persons were critically wounded.
“Those wounded are now at the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti and the bodies of those who lost their lives have been deposited in the morgue in the same hospital.”
The council boss said the Divisional Police Officer of the Ido Ekiti Division and the Ekiti sector commander of the FRSC had visited the scene to ensure free flow of traffic along that route.
Arogbodo, who expressed sadness on the loss of the people, called on motorists to always exercise patience while driving on the road to prevent loss off innocent lives.
The Police Public Relation officer, Ekiti State Command, Mr Alberto Adeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti.
