Traditional worshippers attack Muslims during rituals, Ogun Imams, Alfas allege

Published by

THE League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State has condemned infringements on Muslims’ right to worship freely, but affirmed its commitment to religious tolerance in the state.

Arising from its quarterly meeting held at the Egba Central Mosque, Abeokuta, the league lamented what it described as recurring attacks on Muslims during rituals by traditionalists and urged the government and security agencies to address the situation.

The league, under the leadership of its President-General, Sheikh Sikirullahi Babalola and chief imams, including Sheikh AbdulRazaq Ayanbadejo, Sheikh Sa’adallah Bamigbola and Sheikh AbdulQuadri Jinadu, also discussed other critical issues affecting the well-being of Muslims in Ogun State and the state’s overall progress.

According to a communique issued by the Secretary-General, Rabittah, Ogun State, Imam Tajudeen Adewunmi, the group commended the Ogun State government for respecting the rights of female Muslim students to wear hijab in schools, but expressed dismay at reports of intimidation and persecution by some school authorities and teachers.

The community called on the government to advise the individuals to cease such actions, warning that appropriate legal action would be taken when necessary.

The group also expressed appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies.

The league also called for a thorough investigation into the subsidy removal-related corruption and the redirection of funds towards meant for the revitalisation of national infrastructure and creation of job opportunities for unemployed youths.

It also called on the state government to uphold fairness in cabinet appointments, stressing that Muslims exhibit integrity and commitment to conducting public affairs with justice, accountability and excellence.
