MARKET women in Bomadi-Overside, Delta State, have again called on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to expedite action and inaugurate the ultramodern motor park and market stall project in the community.
The park and stalls have not been put into use since its completion in February 2016.
The market women said the call became necessary after a similar call on the immediate past management of the commission was not heeded.
The situation, they said, had forced them to continue their trading activities on the Bomadi Bridge and roadsides.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, the chairlady, Mrs Oyakebiseimoh Akebofa, said: “We are trading on danger zone as you can see.
“We are forced to continue our business on top of this bridge even after the project was completed over 11 months ago.
“We were ejected from the market when they started the project in 2015.
“NDDC should not toy with our lives, they should come and open this place for us without further delay.
“We heard that a new management came on board late last year. It is really not safe for us to continue trading on this bridge and we the market women are calling on them to speed up the inauguration of the market.”
On his part, the President of Bomadi Youth body, Comrade Kelly Clark, called on the new NDDC board to heed the call of the market women.
“We love our mothers and we don’t want them to continue taking the risk of trading on the highway. After executing a good project like this in our community, what is preventing NDDC from inaugurating the project?
“It is dangerous trading on the bridge; we the youths of Bomadi community are asking the new NDDC management to come and inaugurate this place.”
The Bishop of Bomadi Vicarate of the Catholic Church, Most Reverend Hyacinth Egbebo, while lending his voice to the call, noted that “there is need for a good and functional market here and thankfully NDDC has initiated and completed this one. I see no reason its inauguration should be delayed; the market should be opened so that traders can carry out their business in a decent place.
“We expect NDDC management to inaugurate the project without further delay.”
