Trader in court for allegedly injuring 2 neighbours, 10-month-old baby with cutlass

A 65-year-old trader, Andrew Ajiyat, on Thursday appeared in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly inflicting injuries on his neighbour, a mother and 10-month-old baby.

The police charged Ajiyat, whose address was not provided, with assault.

The prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 24, at Oshikoya Street, Ikosi Ketu, Lagos.

Ihiehie said that the defendant attacked a woman, Mrs Gabriella Opara with a cutlass during a misunderstanding.

He said that another neighbour, Sunday Adelegan was also injured when he tried to separate the fight.

in a bid to collect the cutlass from the defendant also got injured on his two hands with the cutlass.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes three years jail term for assault occasioning harm.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bukola Mogaji, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with three sureties in like sum.

Mogaji ordered that the sureties must be civil servants on GL 12 and above with three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until May 30, for mention.
