Relationship is an important part of our individual lives, and they can also be difficult to explore. However, while this is true, it’s not enough reason for you to tolerate certain toxic behaviours if you spot them in your relationship.
But what are these behaviours? Have you noticed any and how do we handle such? When is the right time to say a bye? I tried to take a look at some of these questions in this article:
If your partner responds to everything with criticisms and tries to bring you down as much as possible, it might be a sign. It is okay to receive criticism, but when it happens constantly for unhealthy reasons, it could make one lose their self-esteem.
Toxic behaviours are not only identified when things get physical. An abusive partner who always wants to control you at every given opportunity is also a problem. As an adult, you should be allowed to make your choices and not have them forcefully influenced. Control is not a sign of love, it negates what it stands for.
Respect is key in every relationship and every form of interaction, in any sphere, should have the element of respect involved. Any type of misbehaviour is unacceptable, not even toxic behaviours. You deserve to be treated like a human being. Yes, this has nothing to do with any gender in particular, respect should be reciprocal.
Someone exhibits toxic behaviour when their main aim is to play mind games and control people’s emotions.
Trust is a very important factor in a relationship, and when it is broken, it is almost impossible to establish it again. Cherish the close relationship with the person who’s honest with you.
This is another toxic behaviour that is non-negotiable. It is also important not to use aggression in communication. When they often insult or belittle you, then it is unhealthy. In any sort of communication, there should be courtesy and respect. Also, get help when you’re being assaulted.
When your partner is always making you question your perception of reality or the state of your mind, you are being gaslighted. It is a form of manipulation and will leave you feeling so worthless. Don’t allow this toxic behaviour to linger.
Also, they allow you to take the blame for their mistakes, and never take responsibility for them.
To keep a relationship, you have to be consistent and expect the same from your partner. If they are hot and cold, it could make you feel insecure and ruin your relationship in the long run.
An ideal partner is the one who should be your biggest supporter, but if they don’t show up as this, and leave you to go through things all by yourself and never support you, then, that right there is a toxic behaviour.
Above all, look out for yourself and aim at leading a lifestyle that’s healthy. Don’t settle for less. Importantly, there’s no timetable on when to move on from toxic relationships.
