Top 8 African Themed Online Games

Published by

The continent of Africa has been the inspiration behind countless video games. From taxi simulators to online slot games, video games with African themes are as diverse as the continent itself. To save you the trouble of searching for hidden gems, we’ve put together eight of the latest video games that show off the cultures, mysticism, and artistry of Africa.

Africa’s Legends

Developed by Leti Arts, Africa’s Legends is a match-three puzzle game that takes the guise of a fighting game. As you can likely tell from its name, this puzzle brawler features heroes based on African myths and legends.

Choose from an eclectic list of fighters, such as mighty pharaohs and Zulu warriors. There are two modes of play, quick battle and quest mode, as well as a brief tutorial for beginners. Quest mode also has achievements badges that are earned by beating opponents.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins

From Italians to Native Americans, Caribbean pirates to Viking warriors, the Assassin’s Creed series has always prided itself on its multicultural pedigree. Assassin’s Creed: Origins takes place in Egypt, putting players into the shoes of a ‘Medjai’, a warrior who fights against evil.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins is virtual tourism on a whole different level, allowing you to visit the pyramids and other famous Egyptian structures (like the Sphinx), experience authentic cultures of the Nile, and immerse yourself in an emotional tale of retribution.

Aurion: The Legacy of the Kori-Odan

Aurion: The Legacy of the Kori-Odan is an action-RPG set within a Nubian fantasy universe. The story is based on the ancient northeastern region of Africa known as Nubia, a land of magical spirits, powerful warrior Queens, and a King struggling with the morality of vengeance.

There are no good guys or bad guys in Aurion, no ‘big hero’ cliches, and no obvious Western tropes. Instead, what you get is a compelling tale of bravery and sacrifice, made with gorgeous 2D artwork and real-time, combo-based combat.

Democracy 3: Africa

Strategy games rarely get as intricate as Democracy 3: Africa. As far as political strategy games go, you would be hard-pressed to find a game with similar depth and detail. The social and economic situations present in Democracy 3: Africa provide many challenging in-game scenarios.

Democracy 3 puts you in charge of an African country, challenging you to hold onto your authority whilst simultaneously fixing any problems with the country in question. Choose from 10 of Africa’s countries to begin your journey, using a turn-based strategy to achieve your goals.

Mzito

Mzito is a 2D action platformer inspired by ancient African themes of culture and spirituality. Playing as a guardian spirit, your task is to travel across Africa, purging corruption and awakening the slumbering spirits of the land.

Assuming you enjoy pixelated graphics, Mzito boasts a vibrant African art style and 15 levels filled with simplistic yet challenging jumping puzzles. Give it a try if you’re a fan of platformers or pixel art.

Nganya Unlimited Rongai

With over 100,000 downloads, it’s fairly safe to assume that Nganya Unlimited Rongaia is an incredibly popular game, especially if you take into account the game’s relative obscurity, its unique title, and the noticeable absence of any obvious marketing.

Nganya Unlimited puts players in the driver’s seat of a ‘nganya’; a customizable public transport vehicle found in Kenya. The game has a full single-player campaign, supports multiplayer, and has a 4-star rating on Google’s Play store.

Resident Evil 5

If you enjoy horror games then Resident Evil 5 is definitely one you will want to try out. The fifth game in this world-renowned survival horror series is the only one that takes place in an African setting, making it a truly unique experience.

The game takes place in Kijuju, a fictional region of Africa. You play Chris Redfield, a longstanding character in the Resident Evil series. Fans of the series might be surprised by how action-oriented the gameplay is, but it’s a welcome change for such an old franchise.

Survival Africa

Survival games represent one of the biggest genres in gaming. However, if you’re tired of zombies and post-apocalyptic scavenging, Survival Africa has a little something different to offer, dropping players into a distinctly African setting.

Survival Africa is a PvP open-world game that takes place in a savannah-based environment. All the standard features of a survival game are present, such as resource gathering; crafting, and combat. It’s a nice change from the ‘dime-a-dozen’ survival sims currently available.
