If you’re still contemplating on what to study as regards a science course, this article is for you. Regardless of what you might have heard of some not so relevant courses; in this case, it is otherwise. You can make something out of the courses here with hard work and dedication. 

Below are the top science courses you should consider ahead of your Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME):

1. Pharmacy 

Pharmacy is a science course concerned with the preparation, production and inspection of medications. In Nigeria, to gain entry into any prestigious university, you must have good grades in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English and Mathematics for undergraduate study. For Postgraduate studies you must already have a degree in pharmacy or any other field related with a second-class honours. Pharmacy is a five year course in Nigeria and one of the glorified professions in the country.

2. Medicine and Surgery

Another top science course is medicine and surgery. It has to do with a broader medical science; including the treatment of injuries, disorders and diseases — which are the surgical aspects. You must have credits in these subjects; Mathematics, English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry before you can apply for this course and it takes five to six years. You must have a Bachelor of Science in Surgery or anything related to get admitted for a Postgraduate programme. 

3. Nursing

Nursing is a profession that incorporates careness and protection in order to avert illness. Nursing is one of the top and relevant professions in Nigeria.  So you need to decide on going for a nursing school or the University first. Whichever, you need an excellent result in WAEC or NECO, but you can combine. Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are the subjects required. School of nursing takes three years while for a degree, it’s five years.

4. Dentistry

Dentistry is all about managing, treating and preventing the teeth from diseases; everything about the health of your mouth and gums. Depending on the University, there is a probability of spending up to five to six years studying this course. You need to have credits in these subjects; Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Biology and Physics to qualify for dentistry. You’ll spend at least six years and you can as well further for your Postgraduate programme.

5. Accounting

Accounting is a field where you get to learn how to process economic activities for investors, stakeholders and companies. You need Financial Accounting, English, Mathematics and any other two related subjects to gain entry into the University to study Accounting. It takes four years and you would also go for professional programmes such as ICAN, ACCA, CIMA for you to be a certified Chartered Accountant. 

6. Economics

Economics is the study that focuses on analysing business choices by individuals or the government. Including the production of goods and services. You need to pass economics and any of the following; Mathematics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Accounting and Government. Economics is a four year social science course. Postgraduate programme for Economics is two years.

7. Computer Science

Computer science is the study of information processing, design and implementation of software and hardware. Due to its relevance in the labour market, it has continued to remain one of the top science courses in Nigeria. All you need is to pass Mathematics, Physics, English and any of these; Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology to attempt entry exams for admission into the University. Computer science is a four year study. For a Postgraduate, it can last two to three years.

8. Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum Engineering deals with the production of hydrocarbons, that is, natural gas or crude oil. Chemistry, Physics, English Language and any of Biology and Agricultural Science are what you need to study this field. For undergraduate programme, it is four years while postgraduate is two years.

9. Agricultural Science

Agricultural Science is the study of techniques and activities that can change the environment using plants and animals. You need any of the following to study Agriculture; Mathematics, Economics, Geography and English. It’s a minimum of four years, depending on school; Masters is for two years.

10. Marketing

Marketing is very essential in any business; it is the process of communicating offerings to partners, clients or customers. It is basically ensuring satisfying and retaining clients. You must have credits in Economics, English and Mathematics before you can study Marketing. It is a four year course and two years for a Masters programme.
