‘Yes, we always used condoms, but I’ll pay N2,000 monthly for the child’s upkeep’

An Ado-Ekiti customary court in Ekiti State has dissolved the four-year-old marriage between Yetunde Kayode and her husband, Temitope, over lack of care.

President of the court, Mr Joseph Ogunsemi, who dissolved the union said he observed that it had broken down irretrievably.

Ogunsemi awarded the custody of the five-month-old baby of the union to the mother, Yetunde, saying that Temitope would be responsible for the child’s education at all levels.

He held that Temitope should pay N5, 000 as monthly feeding allowance for the child.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Ogunsemi granted the respondent access to see his child whenever he wants to.

Earlier, Yetunde, a resident of Abekoko, Falegan area of Ado-Ekiti, told the court that when she got pregnant and told her lover, he gave her money to abort the child.

She said she refused to abort the pregnancy because she had once aborted a pregnancy for him, saying she was not ready to die.

“After I gave birth, he told me he was not the father of the child and since then he has refused to take care of the child.

“My sister has been the one taking care of her,” she said.

She, therefore, prayed the court to dissolve the union and order Temitope to take care of his child.

The respondent, Temitope, 35, told the court that he was not aware Yetunde had a child for him.

He said they were separated in 2015, and since then he had only seen her twice and noticed she was pregnant.

“When I asked her she told me she was not pregnant because she was on family planning.

“While we were dating, I always used condom whenever we had sex,” he said.

He told the court that he would be willing to pay N2, 000 monthly as feeding allowance of the child.
