The National President of Yoruba Elite in Politics (YEP), Comrade Olaposi Oginni, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the agriculture sector.
According to him, declaring a state of emergency in the sector will not only help revive the nation’s economy but also get Nigeria out of the present economic quagmire.
Oginni stated this during the launch of the group’s Cocoa Revolution Project held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday.
During his address, he also urged lawmakers across the country to initiate and enact laws that will promote agricultural production and exports in the country.
“It’s obvious that the total neglect of cocoa farmers and production due to the discovery of oil made the Nigerian economy vulnerable.
In the same vein, the free fall of the naira, as it is today, is also the resultant effect of dwindling exportation.
“To get Nigeria out of the present economic quagmire, the Yoruba Elite in Politics (YEP) is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on agriculture.
The human and natural resources of Nigeria must be fully utilised for optimum production in the area of agriculture for speedy economic recovery,” he said.
Under its cocoa revolution project, the group said it will engage and empower 20,000 young cocoa farmers to return to the farms in the next year while soliciting government support at all levels.
Oginni explained: “Our projection is to restore the lost glory of the old Western Region on cocoa production within the next three years.
“It’s evidently clear that the success of this initiative requires greater support from the South-West governors. We are using this medium to call on all the governors of the South-West to give this project every needed support.
“The moribund farm settlements are suggested to be converted to ‘Cocoa Revolution Villages’ with facilities that will encourage young cocoa farmers to stay focused on the project.”
