Published by

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday called for greater collaboration between the Federal Government and architects, particularly the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), to foster development in the housing sector.

Speaking at the 65th anniversary of the NIA in Abuja, the President acknowledged the Institute’s significant contributions to the nation’s growth over the years.

Represented by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, Tinubu emphasised the crucial role of architects in the administration’s drive to provide affordable housing for the masses.

He stated that architects are equal custodians of *”our spatial justice; you ensure that our cities, homes, hospitals, and public spaces are inclusive, resilient to climate change, and reflective of our cultural diversity.

“Your designs influence how people live, interact, and prosper in the development journey of every progressive society. Architecture stands as a foundation of national identity, economic vitality, and social cohesion.”*

Also represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Shuaib Belgore, the President noted that the government is relying on architects for the success of its housing and urban development initiatives.

“Government initiatives require the deep participation and leadership of the architectural community. We count on your expertise to, among other things, design contextual housing prototypes and champion sustainable, climate-resilient building standards,” he stated.

Tinubu urged the NIA to drive innovation in modular construction and prefabrication technology, as well as collaborate on regulatory frameworks, including design codes and other laws, to enhance building standards in the country.

Also at the event, the immediate past President of the International Union of Architects, Arc. José Luis Cortés Delgado, commended the NIA for its achievements over the past 65 years.

He encouraged the Institute to embrace new innovations and technologies to remain in tune with trends in architectural design.

In her welcome address, the President of the NIA, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi, praised the resilience of the founding members who laid a solid foundation for the Institute.

She revealed that Nigeria currently has over 15,000 architects and noted that efforts are ongoing to increase this number.
