Tinubu presides over first APC national caucus meeting since taking office

President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, presided over the National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking the first such gathering since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

The high-level meeting is taking place at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, with key party leaders in attendance.

It serves as a precursor to the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, scheduled to hold tomorrow at the APC National Secretariat, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Proceedings commenced at 7:20 p.m. following the arrival of President Tinubu, who, as the ruling party’s leader, is presiding over the deliberations.

Among those present at the meeting are: Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, accompanied by nine other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including the Deputy National Chairmen (North and South), National Secretary, Legal Adviser, Treasurer, Organizing Secretary, Women Leader, Youth Leader, and Leader of Persons Living with Disabilities.

Additionally, APC governors are in attendance, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF). Governors from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) are also present, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun State), Prof. Babagana Zulum (Borno State), Uba Sani (Kaduna State), Ahmad Aliyu (Sokoto State), Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Alia (Benue State).

From the South-South, the delegation is led by former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva. Notable party leaders from the North include: Senator Abdulaziz Yari, former Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu.

Representing the South-West are: founding APC National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Iyiola Omisore, Chief Olusegun Osoba, and Senator Lola Ashiru.

Other prominent figures at the meeting include former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, former Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, and former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim.

Discussions at the caucus meeting are centred on key party issues, including: Scheduling a non-elective convention in line with the APC constitution, formation of party standing committees, a presentation on the establishment of The Progressive Institute (TPI), implementation of a membership e-registration exercise, review of a report by the National Legal Adviser on ongoing litigations involving the party.

The outcomes of this meeting are expected to shape discussions at the NEC meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
