Tinubu hosts German President Steinmeier as both leaders vow to enhance bilateral relations

President Bola Tinubu received German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday for a bilateral meeting aimed at strengthening ties between Nigeria and Germany.

Both leaders expressed strong commitments to enhancing their partnership across various sectors, particularly in energy and economic development.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to fortifying the relationship between Nigeria and Germany. He emphasised the potential for mutually beneficial collaboration, focusing on key areas such as energy, which could drive economic growth and development.

During the meeting, Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s openness to international business partnerships, emphasizing that the ongoing economic reforms are designed to create a conducive environment for foreign investments. He noted the enthusiasm from both Nigerian and German policymakers and business leaders to deepen their cooperation, a sentiment fostered by previous engagements.

Tinubu outlined his government’s initiatives to improve Nigeria’s business environment, aiming to elevate the country’s global business rankings and establish frameworks for shared prosperity. He voiced optimism about expanding both people-to-people connections and government-facilitated economic opportunities.

At a joint press conference concluding the bilateral talks, Tinubu remarked, “It was a very fruitful discussion. From our earlier meeting today, I can see that our business leaders and policymakers are eager to collaborate with Germany. Our business doors are open, and our reforms are effective.

We’ve discussed improving business rankings, and we plan to strengthen our relationship to build a partnership that is fulfilling and rewarding for both our countries, enhancing people-to-people relations and government-to-government facilitation of opportunities.”

The partnership promises substantial benefits for Nigeria, including a €4 billion investment from Germany in green energy projects by 2030. This investment aligns with Nigeria’s objectives of economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable development under Tinubu’s leadership.

There are also plans to enhance Nigeria’s position in the global green hydrogen market, with Germany looking to import this renewable resource to support its carbon neutrality goals by 2045.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised the economic reforms underway in Nigeria, applauding Tinubu’s leadership and the resilience of Nigerian citizens. He pledged Germany’s support to further Nigeria’s economic recovery and mitigate the impacts of current economic challenges.

Reflecting on Germany’s own past economic crises, Steinmeier stressed the importance of courage and perseverance in economic transformation—qualities he sees in Nigeria’s current leadership.

“It was not easy; we in Germany faced similar challenges years ago during deep economic crises. It requires a lot of courage and perseverance, which will ultimately benefit your nation. I, along with all in German politics, commend your bold steps and assure you of our support. Germany will stand with you on these ongoing reforms in Nigeria,” Steinmeier stated.
