President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s second-highest national honor, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The award was presented to the visiting Indian leader during the Nigeria-India bilateral meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday.

In his remarks, Tinubu explained that the prestigious honor was bestowed upon Prime Minister Modi as a symbol of Nigeria’s deep appreciation for the growing partnership between the two nations.

The President emphasized that the invitation extended to Modi aimed to revitalize and enhance the relationship between Nigeria and India.

“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India and is committed to broadening and strengthening this partnership for the mutual benefit of our two nations,” President Tinubu stated.

“Prime Minister Modi represents a strong commitment to democratic values, and we greatly respect his remarkable achievement of winning three consecutive elections in a complex society,” he added.

He continued, “It is with great respect and appreciation that I confer upon you, Prime Minister Modi, Nigeria’s National Honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, signifying our nation’s commitment to India as a valued partner.”

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences to Nigeria over the devastating floods that recently affected several cities, including Maiduguri.

In response, Modi pledged to send 20 tons of relief materials to support Nigeria’s ongoing humanitarian efforts, particularly under President Tinubu’s administration.

This gesture of solidarity further underscores the strengthening ties between the two countries.
