Former Senate President of the Second Republic, Joseph Wayas, will finally be laid to rest in his hometown in Cross River State on November 30, 2024.

Wayas passed away in the United Kingdom on November 30, 2021, while receiving medical treatment.

The Secretary, Dr. DC Enamhe, Central Planning Committee for the Burial of Late Dr Joseph Wayas, and Convener, Who is Who in Northern Cross River Forum announced this to reporters on Thursday during a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Calabar yesterday.

He noted that with the assistance of State Governor Senator Bassey Otu and prominent figures from the Who is Who in Northern Cross River Forum, they succeeded in repatriating Wayas’s remains to Nigeria.

Wayas will be interred in his Basang community in the Obanliku local government area, while the funeral rites will take place in Calabar.

Acknowledging the support from various state actors and organizations, Enamhe mentioned that Senate President Godswill Akpabio called Wayas a significant icon whose commitment to national unity is invaluable.

He added, “Akpabio’s effort to facilitate the transport of Wayas’s remains from Abuja to Calabar and then to Bassang community highlights his respect for the legacy of this esteemed national figure.”

“We invite all who admired and respected Dr. Wayas to join us in honouring his life, legacy, and contributions to our country. This is a time to reflect on his remarkable journey, to celebrate his accomplishments, and to give thanks for the indelible Impact he made on Nigeria and Cross River State, he said.
