Three injured, five arrested in clash at Koton-Karfi, Kogi

Three people were injured during a clash at Koton-Karfi, while five others were also arrested by the police.

The incident took place on Wednesday when supporters of two political parties engaged one another, which led to shootings and the destruction of properties in the community.

What led to the incident is yet to be confirmed; however, our correspondent reliably gathered that the incident might be connected to a lingering crisis before the Kogi government election.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the former governorship candidate of the party, Isaiah Davies Ijele, in a statement issued on Wednesday, has called for peace in the community.

The statement that was made available to newsmen in Lokoja stated that the state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, should, as a matter of urgency, address the situation.

The statement read as follows: “I am writing to you with deep concern about the recent attacks on our SDP supporters in Korton Kerfi and Geregu. It is distressing to witness such violence, especially when it stems from political differences, engineered by your own self through numerous threats and utterances.

“As an appointee of the current government in Kogi State, it is crucial to remember that we all have a responsibility to promote peace and unity, regardless of our affiliations. No one should have the right or monopoly to inflict harm on others due to political disagreements. You don’t have any monopoly to be evil against anyone because you think you have the backing of the government for your atrocities in the state.

“I urge you to reconsider your actions and work towards resolving conflicts through dialogue and understanding among your people. Let us strive to build a community where differences are respected and disagreements are resolved peacefully rather than sending your foot soldiers to attack the peace-loving people of Korton and Geregu.

“The reoccurring situation in Korton Kerfi and Geregu is unacceptable but it seems the government has refused to protect the people and It’s crucial at this point we appeal to the peace-loving people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands But It’s important to protect yourselves and be prepared to defend against any threats from Bashir Gegu and his thugs

“Governor Ododo, it’s essential that you distance yourself from these individuals who promote violence. Thuggery should not be tolerated in our state. We must work together to ensure that these troublemakers are held accountable for their actions and are not allowed to disrupt the peace and safety of the citizens of Korton Karfi.

“The safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their political beliefs, should be our top priority. Together, we can create a better and more harmonious environment for everyone.
