Three die in Ondo road accident

At least three people, including two siblings, were confirmed dead in an accident which occurred in Akungba Akoko, in Akoko Southwest local government area of Ondo.

The three persons who include, the two siblings, Joshua Ogbeye, Eniola Ogbeye, 13, and the Okada rider, Idowu Omitogun, 20, were said to have rammed into a stationary vehicle while the driver was trying to alight from the vehicle.

It was gathered that the driver of a private car was trying to get out of his vehicle without looking back when the motorcyclist rammed into it and an oncoming crushed the three passengers on the Okada to death.

According to an eyewitness, who explained that the two passengers and the Okada rider died on the spot and the driver of the vehicle ran away.

He said; “The driver of the car suddenly opened the door and hit the motorcycle which carried the victims and they fell on the road while the other vehicle coming on the other side ran over them”.

He, however, said irate youths of the town torched the vehicle while the identity of the driver of the vehicle remained unknown.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Funni Odunlami who confirmed the incident described it as unfortunate and condemned the burning of the vehicle.

Odunlami also explained that the incident was caused by the driver of the burnt vehicle, saying his identity is still unknown.

She, however, could not confirm if the driver of the Toyota Camry with Registration Number LND 592 GX is a student of the Adekunle Ajasin University or a resident of the town.

She said the remains of the three victims had been deposited at the morgue.

The Ondo Sector Commander of the Road Safety Commission, Mr Ezekiel Son’Allah, who also confirmed the accident, said that it was caused by wrongful overtaking and route violation on the part of the vehicles involved.

Son’Allah said, “Three persons were killed while the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking and route violation. The victims were taken to Aduloju Hospital Akungba by the policemen.”

While cautioning motorists to avoid violating traffic rules, the FRSC boss opined that speed breakers should be mounted on the road to forestall recurrent crashes on the road.
