Three die in Ekiti road crash

 

No fewer than three persons were on Sunday lost their lives during a road crash involving church members from Ise-Ekiti, Ise/Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti state.

NIGERIAN TRIBUNE gathered that the accident involved a bus conveying passengers mostly women from St Mark’s Anglican Church Ise-Ekiti for an event in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

A source informed our correspondent that the bus tumbled several times after one of the tyres had issues along Afolu farm settlement a few kilometres from Ise-Ekiti.

While three persons died in the crash, several others were said to have sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to private hospitals in Ado-Ekiti.

The source said, “The passengers were coming to Ado-Ekiti for a women’s programme at an Anglican Church and after leaving Ise-Ekiti, one of the tyres burst and the bus somersaulted several times.

“Three persons died on the spot, while others with injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.”

The Anglican bishop of Ekiti, Rt. Revd Olusola Ajayi who expressed regret over the accident, commiserated with the families of the deceased and the entire Diocese over the death of the church members.

When contacted, the Sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) in the state, Olusola Joseph, confirmed the accident but said only two persons died and ten others were injured.

He said, “It was a tyre burst that was responsible for the accident involving the 18-seater bus.

“We will continue to appeal to motorists to keep to speed limits. They know the nature of the roads, so they should be very careful while driving on the roads. At the same time, they should keep to traffic rules and regulations.”
