Three die as tankers go up in flames in Rivers

Three persons were reportedly burnt to death on Tuesday in a tanker explosion in  Omurelu community along the Elele-Owerri Road, Ikwere Local Government Area, Rivers State.

Two persons were burnt to death in the ensuing fire from the explosion while the third victim was reported to have died later at the hospital where he was rushed to, with severe burns.

The inferno that resulted from the blast was said to have spread to the community, destroying houses, valuable properties and leaving some persons severely injured.

An eyewitness from the community, Innocent Amadi, said the incident happened when one of the tankers conveying the inflammable product was flagged down by a petroleum task force operating in the area.

He said while the task force was trying to “extort” the tanker driver, another tanker driver on speed lost control and hit the stationed one at the checkpoint.

He said the two tankers fell, spilled their contents, and burst into flames, lamenting that the task force maintained many checkpoints within the community.

Amadi said; “Angry youths from the community went on a rampage, destroying other checkpoints in the community. They are angry with the activities of the task force. We are calling on the state government to intervene to save our people”.
