Three bag distinction as EKSU inducts 34 new medical students

Published by

About 34 medical students from the College of Medicine of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, have been inducted into the medical profession for the 2019/2020 session.

Three made distinctions with two in Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the other in Surgery.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun,  while speaking during the induction said all the students had been exposed to the required training and were found worthy in both character and learning in the profession, “ and have metamorphosed to becoming worthy medical practitioners.”

He noted that he was determined during his tenure as the vice chancellor to make the college of medicine the best in the country, saying all the needed support would be given to the college towards achieving the vision.

Regretting the 10 years spent by the second set of medical doctors for the programme, who were admitted in the 2010/2011 session, the vice-chancellor advised them to be focused and always consult with their colleagues in the profession in taking decisions relating to patients.

He said: “I am aware that medical colleges confer upon its graduates a medical degree but a physician distinguishes him/herself from others by a dint of hard work, research and number of successes recorded in the treatment of patients.

“I admonish you to note that providing healthcare is just one aspect of being a physician. As physicians, you are regarded as healers, saviours, health advocates, scientists and care givers.”

He commended the Visitor and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, for his unflinching support with provision of the needed funds in ensuring the success of the final accreditation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor James Bamidele, urged the new doctors to be faithful to the knowledge, skills and values they had learned in the school and the oath they had sworn to, adding that the profession placed more responsibility on them to the patients and the society in general.

The Registrar of NDCN, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, congratulated the new doctors and the university management on the feat, saying the council would continue to partner with the institution.
