‘Though pregnant, my husband still beat me till I fainted

A woman, Monsurat Gbadegeshin, has pleaded with Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to put an end to the relationship between her and her husband, Idris Gbadegeshin, on the accounts of constant battery and abandonment.

Monsurat explained that Idris was poor and humble when she met and got married to him, but that he became arrogant and domineering, and started assaulting her physically after fortune smiled on him.

The plaintiff recalled an instance the defendant beat and almost damaged her eye.

She stated that she went about with a bloodshot eye for weeks.

Monsurat also narrated an occasion when Idris descended on her with punches not minding that she was pregnant.

According to her, her husband did not stop beating her until she fainted.

The plaintiff explained that she singlehandedly bore the responsibility of their children’s feeding and education after the defendant abandoned her and their children for five years.

She added that he eventually chased her out of his house with a cutlass after they made up and started living together again.

The plaintiff stated that she had had enough of the defendant’s maltreatment of her and therefore prayed that their marriage be dissolved.

She also pleaded for the custody of their children so as to give them proper attention, but pleaded that her husband be made responsible for their upkeep.

Monsurat further requested for an order restraining her husband from threatening or fighting her, and interfering with her private life.

Idris was absent in court despite being served a court summon and hearing

Monsurat in her testimony said, “I did not insist that my husband carry out the expected marital rites before we started living together because he was poor.

“He was gentle and easy going when he had nothing, but I started seeing him in his true colour when fortune smiled on him.

“My husband became proud, harsh and domineering in nature. He hardly ever smiled when around in the house.

“His arrogance increased after he built his house and he started beating me.

“Idris never spared me. He sought every opportunity to hit and wound me.

“I almost lost an eye as a result of the heavy punches he dealt me.

“I went about in pains for weeks as a result of a bloodshot eye.

“I reported my husband to his mother who told me that was how Idris’ father used to beat her.

“My husband abandoned me and our first child who was just eight days old and did not leave any trace of his whereabouts.

“I waited day after day for his return, but he refused to come home.

“I moved back to my parents’ house after months of waiting endlessly for him.

“I was with my parents for five years, feeding and meeting every of our child’s other needs.

“My husband never checked on us nor gave allowance towards our child’s upkeep.

“He came begging and pleading that we made up after the death of my sister who acted in my family on behalf of our parents.

“I forgave him his shortcomings and went back home with him joyful and dreaming of a blissful relationship.  But this was not so.

“I became pregnant with our second child a few months after we were reconciled, but Idris rather than show me love and care went back to his old way of punching and kicking me.

“My husband never trusted me.

“He was always suspicious of my movements and would accuse me of dating other men.

“He beat me blue black on one of these days not minding that I was pregnant and I fainted.

“My husband despite living comfortably has refused to train our first child further in school.

“He asked her to learn a trade instead.

“We had a heated argument over this and chased me out of the house with a cutlass.

“He has refused that I return to his house since then.

“My belongings are still in his house and I want to remove them.

“My lord, I find no joy in my marriage to my husband and I pray for the dissolution of our union.

“I plead for the custody of our children, but I earnestly pray the court to mandate him to be responsible for their upkeep.

“I beg the court to order him to allow me pack my belongings from his house.

“I also request for an order restraining my husband from threatening and fighting me, and also interfering with my private life.”

The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo, after she has heard the plaintiff, adjourned the case and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served the defendant.
