Thesis: Vice chancellor warns against plagiarism

PROF Muhammad Sanusi-Liman, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Lafia, on Thursday warned the postgraduate students of the institution against plagiarism while writing their research reports.

Sanusi-Liman gave the warning during the institution’s postgraduate students’ maiden matriculation in Lafia.

He said that any postgraduate students caught plagiarising would not graduate and would be sanctioned.

“Plagiarism is a very serious offence at the postgraduate level unlike the undergraduate level where it is taken for granted. Anyone caught would be severely sanctioned.

“All postgraduate work will be scrutinised to be sure that the idea is from the student and not a plagiarised work from another author before it is approved,” the vice-chancellor said.

He warned the students to shun social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, religious bigotry and offering sex or money for marks.

Sanusi-Liman said the school authority was aware of the students challenges and had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with private organisations to build a befitting postgraduate lodge.

He called on the students to take advantage of the university’s peaceful academic environment to pursue their area of interest.

“I welcome you to the forte of researchers and urge you to ensure that your research work adds to the existing body of knowledge and also addresses societal problems.

“I assure you that the university will not unnecessarily keep students beyond the stipulated time for any programme,’’ the vice-chancellor said.

He pledged that the authority would offer automatic employment to any postgraduate student who graduated within the stipulated time of their programme.

Sanusi-Liman warned lecturers that they would also face disciplinary action if they were caught accepting gratification to award marks.
