A primary three female pupil of UBE Primary School, Niger State, Aisha Seidu, who emerged as the overall winner in this year’s international jolly phonics reading and pronunciation competition, has attributed her brilliant performance to God; mentorship by her class teacher, school management, classmates as well as her determination to excel in her studies.
The international competition, organised by the Universal Learning Solution, otherwise known as Jolly Phonic competition on the ‘World Read Aloud Day,’ which was held on February 3, 2021 in Abuja had competitors gathered from across the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory( FCT), Abuja.
Aisha, 10-year-old, is the first amongst the three children of her parents, Mr and Mrs Mustapha and Fatima Seidu, and they are both farmers and indigenes of Mokwa LGA of the state.
Aisha, who is living with a relative of her parent; member of staff at the state’s College of Agriculture, Mokwa, added that her participation in the “World Read Aloud Day” competition was her maiden participation and the first time she would travel out of the state to represent her school in a very big competition of that nature.
When asked in an interview with the Tribune Online about her future ambition Aisha responded saying “my future is in the hands of Almighty Allah.”
In his remarks, the headmaster of the school, Mr Alhassan Garba Jiya, said Aisha has made the school very proud by putting the relatively unknown school in Niger State on the map of Nigeria with her outstanding performance during the competition.
Jiya stated that upon Aisha’s victory, her class teacher, Mr Jibrin Salihu, the executive of Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Minna, got an invitation by the state government to the Government House in Minna, where Aisha’s class teacher was awarded with a permanent employment with NSUBEB by the state government as a classroom teacher and posted to same school with permanent and pensionable appointment.
“The state government also gave the little girl a sum of N50,000.00 as a reward for her excellent performance and doing the state proud,” the headmaster said.
He added that she was also appreciated by a Forum of Councillors in Mokwa local government council of the state with the sum of N5,000
The elated Salihu, in his response encouraged other teachers in the state to continue giving their best irrespective of their meagre resources or salaries per month.
Meanwhile, in his reaction to the excellent performance of Aisha, the executive chairman, NSUBEB, Dr Isah Adamu, said, “I can never imagine that the little girl could do us this proud. It shows that there is hope for our public schools in the state, despite the hopelessness being portrayed and that was why we celebrated her.”
The NSUBEB’s boss however stated that the revolution has opened up opportunities for pupils in the state public schools to excel in their academic performances even at the international level.
