There is dearth of good leadership in Nigeria — Bishop Oyedepo

The Chancellor and Chairman Board of Regents, Covenant University, Dr.  David Oyedepo has expressed dismay over what he described as dearth in the leadership structure in Nigeria at all levels.

Speaking at the occasion of the 13th convocation ceremony for the award of first and higher degrees in the university, he disclosed that, there are quite army of men with capacity but mostly Godless individuals. Lack of integrity has become the norm among the vast majority of them.

“Covetousness has also become the cancer of our leadership structure  across the length and breath of the country and the vast natural resources have become the estate of number of our self-centered leaders across board,” Dr Oyedepostated.

The founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide lamented that, Africa is at the precipice of total collapse except a new generation of leaders take over the stage.

Dr. Oyedepo, while giving solutions to the predicament that has befallen the nation, said the country desperately needs the right of education, raising the right kind of leaders, promoting the right kind of values and graduating the right kind of students in order to bring about the quality of transformational changes that the part of the world require.

Dr.  David Oyedepo noted that, the place of quality university cannot be over emphasized as it has proved to be the mist veritable vehicle for national transformation in human history, he added that “No nation has ever risen above the investment in quality education”

The keynote speaker, Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, while speaking on the topic “Influencing Change in Africa: Roles and Responsibility of Emerging Leaders” admonished youths across the country to put humanity before any transaction they make towards achieving success in life.

She admonished the graduating students not to be discouraged with the challenges bedeviling the country and also refuse the temptation to allow it  becloud their visions.

“Don’t get entangled in the failures of the older people, as whatever you see of Nigeria today, is a product of how everyone has handled the country and we all have to held accountable for it. Nevertheless you can put the past behind you and look forge ahead to a brighter future” she added.

She told the graduating students that they can become whatever they want to become despite the challenges incumbent in the country, stressing that the challenges are not big enough to stop their driven ambitions.

She made it known to the graduands that, life will open at different stages for them but they have to respond to it as it presents itself, as education does not define everything but continuous learning, applying talent must be combined with everything they have been taught.

Awosika urge them to seek knowledge with character and not seek pleasure at the expense of others and also they should be a generation of social scientists with conscience and be the best in all spheres as the country is embedded in  everything they need to be great.

The First bank boss encouraged them to empower their mind, think strategically,  invest in learning and acquire skills through mentorship.

Meanwhile, a total number of 1,877 were awarded first and higher degrees, while 62 bagged first classes and Salami Flourish of the department of Chemistry came out overall best with a CGPA of 4.99.
