The Eastern Heartland: Notable activists from Imo State

Imo State, located in southeastern Nigeria, is one of the most popular states in Nigeria despite being one of the smallest in size. After its creation in 1976 from the old East Central State, Imo State has had a rich history of being a national leader in education, activism, entertainment and business, making it one of the most recognizable and relatable states in various fields in Nigeria. In this post we will look at some of the most staunch activists the state has ever produced who have had an impact on social issues across Nigeria.

Justice Chukwudifu Oputa

Born in Oguta in present Imo State, Justice Oputa was an icon who became the face of Nigeria’s most earnest push to remedy the evils of the recurring military regimes when he served as the head of The Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission of Nigeria, famously referred to as the Oputa panel, to investigate human rights during the period of military rule from 1984 to 1999. Justice Oputa’s panel was very diligent in identifying and addressing human rights violations during the military regimes between 1984 and 1999, and helped many Nigerians get justice and respite for their suffering during this period.

Flora Nwapa

Flora Nwapa is one of the most notable contributors to the literary space in Nigeria. Born in Oguta in Imo State, she bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree from University College, Ibadan, before earning a Diploma in Education from Edinburgh University in 1958. Nwapa had many successful stints as a teacher and a public servant in the civil service, but she is best known for her invaluable contributions to literature in Nigeria, especially for Nigerian women. She achieved international recognition with her first novel Efuru, published in 1966 by Heinemann Educational Books, making her the first Nigerian female published novelist, as well as the first African woman novelist to be published in the English language in Britain. Flora’s work was revolutionary because it opened the field of literature for Nigerian women, and served as an inspiration for subsequent acclaimed female Nigerian novelists such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Buchi Emecheta.

Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi

Chima Amadi is one of the most tenacious advocates of electoral reform and good governance in Nigeria. Born in Kano State, Dr. Amadi attended primary school in Kano before the breakout of the Kano riots forced his family to return to Imo State. He bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Ibadan, gaining a reputation for tenacious activism during his stint as Secretary of the Students Union there. After his undergraduate degree, Dr. Amadi embarked on a quest to satisfy his drive for education, earning multiple Master’s and doctorate degrees in a wide variety of fields such as Economics and Development Studies, Political Science, Democracy and Comparative Politics, Comparative Public Policy and Administration etc.

An ardent social activist, Dr. Amadi is a staunch advocate for human rights in Nigeria, as well as the role of elections in furthering the protection of these human rights. His work addresses critical issues such as elections in Nigeria, patronage and agency budget in presidential appointments, public institutions’ accountability, and the role of Nigeria in international economic relations. In addition to being a social and political activist, Dr. Amadi is also a renowned philanthropist, empowering countless young people in Nigeria with educational and business opportunities, while also massively empowering communities in his native Ngor-Okpala LGA and Imo State in general.

Onyeka Onwenu

Born in Obosi, Anambra State but with her roots in Arondizogu, ImoState, Onyeka Onwenu was one of the most recognizable faces inNigerian entertainment. After her education in the United States,Onyeka Onwenu returned to Nigeria to join the Nigerian TelevisionAuthority (NTA) as a Corps member, immediately making waves as aresult of her fearless journalism and social activism. She began herrecording career in 1981 while still with the NTA, releasing her firstalbum For the Love of You in 1981. Her music, just like her writinginterrogated front burner issues as at that period such as health(HIV/AIDS), peace and mutual coexistence, respect for women’srights, and the plight of children. She was one of the first women torise to national stardom off her musical prowess, and continues toexert a lasting influence on the music and wider entertainment scenein Nigeria.

Adiele Afigbo

Born in Ihube in current Okigwe LGA of Imo State, Afigbo grew to become one of the most acclaimed and widely quoted historians in Nigeria, known for the history and historiography of Igbo history and the history of Southeastern Nigeria. Afigbo started his career as a historian in the 1950s with the Ibadan School of History, which devoted its time to demonstrating the need for African history and historiography as specific genres of the world history. Afigbo built a reputation for interrogating long-held misconceptions about African and Igbo history, using his research to set the record straight about history of Igbo precolonial society.
