The Criterion trains 50 members on tomato production

As part of efforts to improve living conditions and enhance capacities, about 50 members of The Criterion, an association of Muslim women in business and the professions, Oyo District, have participated in a one-day seminar on tomato production, processing and preservation.

At the programme held at the University of Ibadan, the participants were given both theoretical and practical training on tomato disease control, organic fertilizer application, processing and preservation.

Head of Department, Crop Protection and Environmental Biology, University  of Ibadan, Professor Rasheed Awodoyin and one of the resource persons, Mr Akinbode Akinkunmi, said application of knowledge on tomato  by the participants would go a long way in making them financially empowered and urged them to ensure that tomato seeds that have resistance varieties were planted.

They also urged the participants to make good use of the preservation processes of tomato which is currently in abundance in market.

Amirah, The Criterion, Oyo District, Alhaja Falilat Olatunji , said the members would make good use of the skills acquired to become self-employed while the knowledge would be shared with others.

She said apart from regular Islamic activities, the association organises empowerment programmes which would serve as additional sources of income for members.

The participants described the programme as eye-opening and timely.
