Have you seen a baby play with any item before? The first thing they do is put it in their mouth to see what it tastes like, then they proceed to bang it on the floor to see what it sounds like, then they proceed to bang it on themselves, rub their hands over it, spit on it before someone finally save the item from them or they get bored and drop it and when it gets out of reach, they find a way to scoot over to get it if they are not done exploring.
They explore using their environment using their sense of taste, smell, feel, and sound.
All children are naturally creative, their curiosity and desire to explore the world drive them to use their imagination and problem-solving skills in innovative ways. They are constantly coming up with new ideas, wondering and asking questions about how things work, what something does, and what it will be like if done differently.
The environment determines if their creativity will follow them into later years based on how these questions are addressed early on.
Who is a Creative Child?
A creative child is a curious child, able to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways of getting things done. They usually ask a lot of questions, are open to new experiences, and are not scared to take risks and make mistakes, they are imaginative, enjoy playing make-believe, don’t give up easily, and are self-motivated.
To encourage creativity in children we need to:
Nurture their curiosity, answer their questions, and provide them with resources they can find answers on days you are unable to.
Expose them to as many experiences as possible, the more activities they are exposed to in their early years, the more outlet they have to explore and express their creativity.
Let them make mistakes, creativity is better nurtured through belief and patience, be okay with them creating a mess, making mistakes, learning on their terms, and being expressive about your belief in them.
Encourage them towards unstructured play, dont always provide them with entertainment give them time to explore their environment, and play by themselves as this stimulates them to think of new ways to stay occupied.
Redirect their questions back to them sometimes to stimulate new thoughts and walk them through the answers to improve their creative thinking.
Creativity is not just about imagination, it is about seeing what others have seen and thinking what no one else has thought, creative children are more likely to be successful in school and their careers.
On this children’s day, let’s celebrate the creativity of children, let us encourage them to be boundless in their imaginations, let us encourage them to make mistakes early so they can soar, let us give them the mental freedom required to bloom, our job as to parent is not to make them as we desire but to support them to be the best possible versions of themselves.
The world is their canvas, let’s support them in painting it!
