Appreciate
However you acquired your shiny piece, it is important to value it. For some, there is sentimental attachment to certain pieces, and this may make them look worn out earlier than necessary. There will come times, for certain kinds of jewellery, that you’re faced with the sad reality of discolouration. To prevent this as much as possible, alternate between wears. Instead of wearing regularly, make it as often as necessary. And if you have a favourite, endeavour to get a few more pieces of the same to reduce the pressure on one.
Box
It’s important to keep your jewellery in a safe place to avoid danger not just to yourself, but to others as well, especially children.
For instance, for earrings, no matter how tired you are, never fall asleep with jewellery on. You not only run the risk of getting poked in the skin, you will end up speeding up the fading process when you rub them too often against the skin.
Also, keep your earrings in a safe place, well away from the reach of children, to prevent them from swallowing or getting them lodged in the ear or other such parts. As such, make good use of a jewellery box. This will not only prevent dust from getting into it, it will also minimise loss and exposure to the elements.
Coat
There is the common knowledge that coating jewellery with clear nail polish will help to make them last longer. This is not untrue. However, the coating would depend on the jewellery. For rings, preferably, coat the insides, to prevent them from wearing off from removing them occasionally.
Dry
As much as possible, keep your jewellery from liquids. Sweat, oil, and even water, are not good companions of shiny jewellery. After each wear, endeavour to clean with a dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals on them.

Oluwaseyi Alade, a painter, sculptor, and fabric artist, tells Makeover what style means to her.
Style to me is Seredipity-Therapeutic-Yielding – Lithe – Elegant.
“My work and motherhood defines many facets of my aesthetic rendition of living space and fashion.
“In many ways, it reflects my lifestyle, mood and spirit. As a painter, sculptor and fabric artist, my style reflects my designs, even up to my shoes, which are flats nowadays, so I can cope with extra weights as I tag baby along.
“I don’t let down my long hair as often as before either, so baby doesn’t snag them.”
