Tenant docked over threat to kill landlady in Ondo

A 27-year-old man, Chukwuemeka Igwe, has been brought before a magistrate court in Akure for allegedly threatening to kill his landlady and her children over his failure to pay house rent.

The police charged Igwe, who resides in Ala-Elefosan in Akure, with the offences of threat to kill and breach of peace.

According to Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 6, 2023, at about 10:00 pm at his residence in Ala-Elefosan, Akure, in the Akure Magisterial District.

He told the court that the defendant threatened to kill his landlady, Mrs. Deborah Sunday, during a misunderstanding in the compound over house rent. The prosecutor alleged that the defendant chased the landlady and her children out of her house with a cutlass, threatening to kill them if they returned to the compound.

The police prosecutor further alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by his inhumane act. He said the offence contravened Sections 86 and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The prosecutor requested an adjournment to enable him to gather his witnesses and study the case file.

The defence counsel, G. Benard, prayed the court to grant his client bail on the most liberal terms, while the prosecutor did not oppose the defendant’s bail. However, the prosecutor prayed that the court put the defendant on bond to maintain peace and tranquility.

Magistrate Olusola Olujobi admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. Olujobi cautioned the defendant to be of good behaviour and maintain peace until the determination of the case, adjourning the case to January 28, 2023, for mention.
