Temitayo Oni emerges winner of Andtop Charity foundation competition

Published by

A student of Rhema Chapel International School, Oluyole, Ibadan, Temitayo Oni, emerged as the winner of the 2023 Andtop Charity Foundation competition among secondary school students in the country on Saturday.

The competition was designed to bring the best out of Nigerian students through the provision of educational opportunities to the underprivileged without favouritism or nepotism.

The overall winner went home with a cash prize of N250,000; the first runners-up, Samuel Akinwunmi from FUTA Staff Secondary School, Ondo State, received N150,000; and Elizabeth Olanrewaju from Deeper Life School, Akure, Ondo State, got N100,000.

According to the founder of the foundation, Mr Temitope Olawale, the idea behind the gesture is a way of giving back to society, especially going by his background and that of the co-founder, Mr Andrew Akindutire.
Olawale charged the winners to focus on leadership positions and always think about how they also want to give back to society.

He said: “We have gone through a lot coming up at the same time of growing up, and that is why we decided to give back to society from what God has done for us by helping underprivileged kids and indigent students to make sure they are in school.

“We cover the whole South-West states, and we are also in the North Central, where we cover Kwara and Benue states.

“We are also in the North East, where we cover Bauchi and Gombe states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and we hope that in the next couple of years, we will cover the whole 36 states of the federation.”

Also, Head of Operation, Mr Joseph Ojo, said the programme is a yearly programme where they invite students across the country to participate in the competition.

He said they conducted a reading examination for the students at the state level before they proceeded to the national level.

He encouraged the beneficiaries to use the money judiciously.

“The focus for this edition was on a national examination competition for High School Science students, and it was a very successful programme.”

Meanwhile, the guest speaker, Professor Peter Olapegba, from the Department of Psychology, University of Ibadan, spoke on the pros and cons of Genz’s learning experiences and relationship to Social Media Use.

He described the generation as digital natives who never knew a life without the internet.

He said their lives are about digital devices, the internet, and social media, among others, and they are using them positively as well as negatively.

He urged the government to decolonize the school curriculum in such a way that it recognises the needs of this generation and tailors the teaching, education, learning, and experiences in personalised ways.
