Teenagers plead guilty to stealing phones from pedestrians

An Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Thursday remanded four teenagers who pleaded guilty to stealing cell phones from pedestrians.

The defendants – Hameed Afesomu, Thomson Samuel, Akeem Player and Dare Abiodunm – aged 16, 15, 14 and 13 respectively,  are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy,  stealing and breach of the peace.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs F.A Azeez, remanded the defendants and adjourned the case until  May 29 for review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. John Iberedem told the court that the teenagers committed the offences on April 15 at Turn-Up area of Ikorodu.

Iberedem said that they stole phones from pedestrians and conducted themselves in a manner that breached the peace when they created fear in their neighbourhood.

According to the Prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 299, 297 and 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 297 provides for three years’ jail term for stealing,  while Section 168(d) stipulates three months’ for breach of the peace.
