Governor Masari
Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has tasked institutions in charge of designing school curriculum at the basic education levels to adopt the use of mother tongue in teaching pupils at the early stages of their education.
He stated this at the launch of three books in Hausa literature written by Malam Mande Muhammad, an indigene of the state with the support of the state government.
Represented by the state Commissioner of Education, Professor Badamasi Charanchi, Masari noted that teaching pupils at the early stages of their education in their mother tongue has been scientifically proven to enhance their cognitive skills.
He quoted notable educational psychologists who had observed based on experiment that teaching a foreign language to pupils at the early stages of their education limits their capacity to learn.
The governor said the state government will continue to promote Hausa literature in order to preserve the culture and heritage of the state as a home of Hausa literary studies.
In his remarks, the state Chief Judge, Justice Musa-Danladi Abubakar, commended the author of the three books and urged students of Hausa literature to emulate him by writing books to preserve the language for future generations.
Tribune online has observed that teaching pupils in English in Katsina Schools has generally drastically reduced the number of students qualifying in exams all levels of education.
