Taraba govt, Unity Campus Services launch students empowerment initiative

Published by

In a visionary stride towards redefining student welfare and holistic development in Nigeria, the Ministry of Tertiary Education, in partnership with Unity Campus Services (UCS), has officially launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering tertiary students across the state.

The landmark programme was recently inaugurated at Taraba State University, Jalingo, setting a remarkable pace for student support services nationwide.

The event also witnessed the inauguration of DoktorConnect, UCS’s digital health platform offering 24/7 virtual access to licensed medical professionals, mental health support, and preventive care.

Speaking at the official launch, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Mike Dio, described the initiative as a timely intervention, not just in education but in health, empowerment, and student life development.

“This is about more than just academic performance. It’s about creating an environment where our students can thrive mentally, physically, and financially,” he remarked.

Also present at the launch was the Supervisory Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Hamidu Ahmed Kara, who reiterated the state government’s full support. He commended UCS for tailoring its services to the unique challenges faced by Nigerian students and applauded the innovation behind the UCS model, urging other institutions to adopt similar partnerships that prioritise student-centred solutions.

The Chief Executive Officer of Unity Campus Services, Dr Joseph Olowe, stated, “Too many students suffer from preventable health challenges that disrupt their academic journey.

“Our mission with UCS is to eliminate these barriers by leveraging technology and providing round-the-clock healthcare access, economic relief, and essential services right on campus.

“Other UCS components—WallX, which makes financial transactions seamless on campus; Foodbank, which tackles student hunger; and United Healthcare, which brings in-person clinical outreach to campuses—were also introduced as part of the service rollout.”

Also in attendance was the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Hon Johnness Jigem, who reaffirmed the governor’s vision for a student-focused administration and praised the synergy between UCS and the Ministry. He emphasised the state’s continued investment in youth development and student health as a core pillar of its education agenda.

Representing the student body, Comrade Adejorin Tai Manuel, Students’ Representative for Unity Campus Services (UCS), expressed deep appreciation to the Executive Governor of Taraba State, Dr Agbu Kefas, for his unparalleled support for educational development and student empowerment. He also extended gratitude to the Honourable Commissioner, Dr Mike Dio, and the Vice-Chancellor of Taraba State University for their leadership and commitment to transformative change on campus.

“Students deserve more than classrooms,” Comrade Tai Manuel stated. “They deserve access to health, support, nourishment, and dignity. UCS is delivering that, and we are proud to be part of this movement.”

The event was received with overwhelming enthusiasm from the student community and academic stakeholders alike. As UCS expands across other institutions, it promises to set a new standard for integrated student welfare services in Nigeria.
