Taraba govt recovers, returns 198 stolen cows, 58 sheep to owners

The Taraba State government, through the committee on cows/sheep recovery, on Thursday handed over a total of 198 cows and 58 sheep and rams that were stolen within the areas of Karim-Lamido, Nasarawa State, and Plateau State to their legitimate owners.

Alhaji Aminu Hassan Jauro, the Jalingo Local Government Council Chairman, disclosed during the handing-over exercise at the Taraba State College of Agriculture, Science and Technology that the committee, after rigorous checks on 52 groups of cattle rearers to ascertain the genuine owners, discovered that the heads belonged to two groups.

According to the council chairman, the two groups were able to present 90 per cent proof before the committee to prove that they were the legitimate owners of the animals.

“Through the intelligence efforts of the combined operation of security agencies, the local vigilante and hunters, we have intercepted 222 cows and 58 sheep. The cows were intercepted in the Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba after being rustled around the areas of Karim-Lamido, Nasarawa and Plateau States.

“Following the development, the state government directed the constitution of a committee to source, identify, verify and ensure the genuine owners of the cows.

“After due diligence, two groups presented 90 per cent proof that they were the genuine owners of the cows and sheep. Meanwhile, among the two groups, 198 cows and 58 sheep and rams belong to one group, while 24 cows belong to the other,” he narrated.

The council chairman, while commending Governor Agbu Kefas for finding them worthy for the assignment, expressed that 24 cows were going to be held back, pending proper identification by the true owner.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Yau Ibrahim, the Taraba State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, commended the security and the committee’s efforts in ensuring that the cows were intercepted and handed over to the genuine owners.
