The Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has called for the total overhaul of the Nations security architecture in other to checkmate the ugly trends of banditry as well as rising cases of insurgency within the country.
The governor stated this in his opening remarks at International Conference, Kasarawa, Sokoto at the ongoing 15th All Nigeria Editors’ Conference holding in the state
Tambuwal also disclosed that though the Federal and state government had done much in containing the menace, he said much still needs to be done.
He charged media not to be despaired in discharging their duty in the midst of economic hardship in which media also is feeling the heat but advised that they should keep faith for better days ahead.
Tambuwal further expressed his worries about the hate speech bill before the National Assembly with the death penalty as punishment, saying it is scary, the action of the sponsor can undermine the unity of this country.
” our democracy cannot thrive or operate well under military dictatorship he said.
He urged the broadcast media to brace up to the challenge of digitization to meet up with global needs.

On his part, the chairman of the event and former Governor of Ogun State, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, said how he wish Tambuwal is still the speaker of the house of representative the hate speech bill would have not seen the light of the day.
The respected media guru stated that social media are not part of items that was guided by the code of conduct and ethics for its practice.
He said the council will resist the draconian law stressing that some of them previously paid a supreme price in instituting democracy in the country.
“As a chieftain of All Progressive Congress, I will lobby the national assembly to kill the bill”.
Earlier the acting president Nigeria guild of Editors Mustapha Isah commended the Governor Tambuwal for hosting this year conference stressing that the Governor has demonstrated to be a reliable friend of the media and the guild in particular.
Mustapha added that without a robust media our nascent democracy can not survive, sustained nor can be nurtured.
He explained that truly media is in serious distress because of the general downturn in the country economy that had adversely affected the media businesses
” We must survive in order to perform our constitutional duty of holding the government to account he said.
He urged the council and the general public in protecting free speech as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.
He further explained that the hate speech bill is targeted at the media and the Nigerian Guild of Editors is not in support and will never support fake news and hate speech.
The conference is expected to last for two days where the Managing Director of Tribune newspaper is expected to deliver a paper on “New media as future of newsroom: Myth or Reality”.
